AI Literacy
The Article 4 duty, in force since February 2025, to ensure staff working with AI systems have sufficient AI knowledge and skills.

Article 4 of the AI Act requires providers and deployers to take measures to ensure, to their best extent, a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff and other persons operating or using AI systems on their behalf, taking into account their technical knowledge, experience, education, and the context the systems are used in. It applies to every provider and deployer, regardless of risk tier, and has applied since 2 February 2025, making it one of the first AI Act duties in force. There is no prescribed curriculum. Proportionate implementations range from basic awareness training on capabilities, limitations, and risks (hallucinations, bias, data handling) for general staff, to role-specific training for those operating high-risk systems, with attendance documented.
Why it matters
AI literacy is the AI Act obligation most organisations already violate without knowing, and the cheapest to fix. A documented, role-based training programme is also the natural first building block of broader AI governance.
