AI Office
The European Commission body that supervises general-purpose AI models and coordinates AI Act enforcement across the EU.

The AI Office, established within the European Commission, is the EU-level centre of AI Act governance. It directly supervises providers of general-purpose AI models, including systemic-risk designations, codes of practice, model evaluations, and serious-incident follow-up. It also develops guidance, coordinates with the national market surveillance authorities that enforce the act against providers and deployers of AI systems, and supports the European Artificial Intelligence Board, where member states coordinate. The division of labour matters: GPAI model providers answer to the AI Office; AI system providers and deployers answer primarily to national authorities in each member state, with the AI Office ensuring consistency.
Why it matters
The AI Office's guidance, templates, and the GPAI code of practice are the practical reference points for interpreting the act, much as ENISA's guidance is for NIS2. Watching its publications is the cheapest way to stay ahead of enforcement expectations.
